New Jersey has countless beautiful beaches along our 130 miles of coastline and I strive to visit as many as possible. Some are small, sleepy beaches tucked away down a sandy path. Others are made for the masses with so much to enjoy. This beach falls somewhere in between. It’s certainly not tiny or hidden but it is a beautiful natural oasis that visitors love. Still, it sometimes gets passed by in favor of neighboring beaches (like Seaside Park) with big boardwalk attractions. Here’s what you need to know about Island Beach State Park.
Island Beach State Park is a narrow barrier island spanning 10 miles and located between the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay.Island Beach is one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier beaches on the north Atlantic coast.You’ll find over 3,000 acres of coastal dunes that remain virtually unchanged since they were first described by explorer Henry Hudson in 1609.In addition to the striking natural dunes, the park is home to a variety of landscapes including thicket, freshwater wetlands, maritime forest and tidal marshes.While the soft white sand is sure to impress, you’ll also find over 400 plant species including the largest expanse of beach heather in New Jersey and the state’s largest Osprey colony.Of course the famed red foxes are also a favorite. These wild creatures shouldn’t be bothered but are often happy to pose for a picture (from a safe distance).Popular beach activities include swimming, surfing, fishing, hiking, biking and horseback riding.Portions of the park (including the Fisherman’s Walkway) are wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs specifically designed for beach usage are available at the pavilions and park office.While there are no arcades or carnival games, you will find a small concession area serving snacks, drinks and adult beverages.Other amenities include an interpretive center, herbarium, coast guard stations and interpretive programs.
Yes, this is New Jersey. You don’t need to travel down to the Carribean for beautiful white sand beaches. Have you been to Island Beach State Park yet? You can visit daily from sunrise to sunset.
